A tough game awaited the Mens 1’s this week, taking on last seasons league winners in Carlisle. With only 11 players for a home game was a disappointing sight, but the boys started the game as we had done in each of our 2 games so far. A 1-0 lead after just a few minutes with the goal coming from Hector after a baseline carry from Josh. Hectors first goal for the 1s caps a dramatic rise, having only been playing 3’s last season. The fast start, once again, however disappeared and 2 quick goals from Carlisle saw the boys 2-1 down going into half time. The second half showed an improvement but we just could not score. A gift of an intercept from Callum meant an open goal, only for their keeper to superman dive across and keep it out. A couple of short corners followed, with a post player clearance followed by a combination of goalkeeper, post player and the cross bar keeping out consecutive short corner attempts from Josh. A few challenges were flying in now, leading to Graeme wiping out their centre forward, but the Carlisle playing receiver of the yellow card… and in the final minutes skipper Josh lost his head and retaliated to a kick from a Carlisle player. 2 yellows in the final play of the game put a sour note on the loss, but showed the passion the team had to get the deserved equaliser. We keep going however, and next week take on North Shields away looking for better play as well as an improved outcome.
